Nationwide was founded by the Ohio Farm Bureau
Federation, a consumer group organized in 1919 by Ohio farmers when early Farm
Bureau leaders decided to start an auto insurance company because they believed
they were being overcharged by established insurers. Common sense told them it
was only fair that rural drivers pay less for their auto insurance because they
had fewer traffic accidents than city motorists.
On that belief, the Ohio Farm Bureau
Federation incorporated the Farm Bureau Mutual Automobile Insurance Company with
a $10,000 loan in Columbus, OH officially starting business on April 12, 1926.
Farm Bureau Mutual expanded into other states
with help from locally based "sponsoring" organizations including
the Maryland Farm Bureau in 1928, to residents of towns and small cities
and, eventually, began insuring motorists in metropolitan areas. In 1955, the
Farm Bureau Mutual name was changed to Nationwide Insurance.
Today, Nationwide is one of the largest
diversified insurance and financial services providers in the United States with
more than 16 million policies and certificates in force, serviced by more than
33,000 employees and agents.
