Nationwide was founded by the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation, a consumer group organized in 1919 by Ohio farmers when early Farm Bureau leaders decided to start an auto insurance company because they believed they were being overcharged by established insurers. Common sense told them it was only fair that rural drivers pay less for their auto insurance because they had fewer traffic accidents than city motorists.
On that belief, the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation incorporated the Farm Bureau Mutual Automobile Insurance Company with a $10,000 loan in Columbus, OH officially starting business on April 12, 1926.
Farm Bureau Mutual expanded into other states with help from locally based "sponsoring" organizations including the Maryland Farm Bureau in 1928, to residents of towns and small cities and, eventually, began insuring motorists in metropolitan areas. In 1955, the Farm Bureau Mutual name was changed to Nationwide Insurance.
